New BC council members take oath

Tommy Mann Jr.

BRIDGE CITY — Citizens and family members were on hand Tuesday night to witness the swearing-in of four City Council members during the regular meeting.

The first item on the agenda was the Oath of Office for the new officials, which was presided over by Paul Fakuda, city attorney, and Bobbie Burgess, the outgoing mayor.

Kirk Roccaforte was sworn in as the new mayor of Bridge City and took control of the meeting shortly afterward.

Joining Roccaforte were David Rutledge, who was re-elected to Place 4, and newly elected officials Mike Reed in Place 2, replacing the seat held by Mark Philpott, and Louis Davis in the Place 6 seat, which was previously occupied by Tom Perry.

Roccaforte’s first official action was to oversee the appointment of a new mayor pro-tem.

Rutledge’s nomination of Place 2 Councilman Robert Simonton Jr. was seconded and approved unanimously.

The council members then entered into an executive session to discuss the possibility of filling the now vacant Place 1 position, which was originally held by Roccaforte before becoming mayor.

Upon reconvening, the City Council members unanimously approved the motion to appoint Kevin Mott to the Place 1 seat.

The next council meeting is scheduled at 6 p.m. on June 6 at City Hall.
