Port remains strong despite economy

While the U.S. and world economies have suffered downturns, the Port of Port Arthur remains strong, according to a report presented to commissioners last week.

Orlando Ciramella, senior director of trade development, reported on a recent meeting with Brazilian officials where he was told the projected increases in pulp wood production for the country had been postponed due to the recent downturns in the world economy. But, he said current production levels would remains the same and shipments of the product through the port would not only continue, but could increase over the next year.

“This is good news for the port,” Mark Underhill, board president, said. “It means continued success for the port and the city and shows how hard our team is working.”

Commissioners were also told project cargo for the local Motiva construction projects would continue to come through the port and would include materials from Corpus Christi, Maine, South Carolina and Mexico.

The expected barges continue shipments the port has handled for Motiva over the past few weeks.

“This means with the cargo mix we are handling we should maintain a steady course,” Underhill said.
