NEDERLAND — NEDERLAND — Christina Borel parked around the corner behind the police station and could smell the Cuisine Walk from there.

The Nederland woman bundled up sons Christian, 10, and Christopher “Nu Nu,” 4, and headed to the Nederland Heritage Festival on Thursday. It was their first night to attend and Mom felt she was behind schedule … on eating.

“I look forward to spring break … no cooking all week,” she said.

Boudain balls are a favorite, she said, keeping one eye on Nu Nu, who was ready for the rides.

Such savory balls of goodness were on the Nederland Rotary Club booth’s menu, along with pizza, smoothes and what cook Jimmy Moss says is the No. 1 seller: fried Oreos.

“Its been good. We’ve had reasonably good weather and that means a good turnout. It’s a good opportunity for us to raise funds and people come out and support us because they know it goes to help the community,” Moss said.

The club’s projects, including Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs.

It seems all of Nederland has come out to support the festival, which opened Tuesday along Boston Avenue. A couple of Port Neches-Groves High School students, Indians who were happy to get in the middle of Bulldog country.

“We came to hang out and see people,” Kimberly Devillier, 15, a PN-G student, said.

Her classmate Elyssa Arebalos, 15, dittoed her friend’s summation that the bands, rides and food made the festival a hot spot.

The festival is dryer than it was this past year, which makes organizers glad they “tried it again.”

“Everything’s good. We’ve had great weather. We’ve had record crowds and we’re up and rolling and having a great time here. There’s a lot of good food,” Hollier, director, said.

The new Ring of Fire ride has seen lots of action, albeit not from Hollier herself.

“The kids are telling me it’s a blast,” she said.

“Let’s Try it Again in 2010” is the Nederland Heritage Festival’s theme. The festival is set for March 9-14 along Boston Avenue in Nederland. For more festival information, call Wanda Hollier at 724-2269. The Jimmy Kaiser Band will perform Friday.
