PORT ARTHUR — Stahl rhymes her love of PA

Iterviewed Joyce Stahl as a Senior on the Go, then I interviewed her 100-year-old mother for the same honor. Stahl says she’s moved to New Mexico, but wanted to share her “funny little poem” she wrote about Port Arthur. Here is an excerpt:





Even seniors can

Retire and relax,

Most are exempt

from property tax.



Our history is

Refineries and oils

And a Cajun stampede

With their crawfish boils



Texas is large

With many a fence,

But only Port Arthur can boast

That its mayor is a “Prince”



Groves Library gets a TV

Deborah Harper, director of the Groves Public Library, says the Friends have purchased a 40” TV which will be in the adult reading area of the library; and often tuned to news and information programming. It will also be utilized for programming needs in the meeting room.  In speaking about the addition of television in the library realm, she pointed out that all forms of information are acceptable in today’s library. Once it was consider ridiculous for a library to offer videos, and then computers to the public. However in a modern library all forms of knowledge and information should be welcomed. Libraries need to be thought of not as institutions but as “public spaces” that give people a place to socialize and to relax.



Stark Museum to to dedicate sculpture

The Stark Museum of Art will host artist Dan Ostermiller, creator of the Museum’s new outdoor sculpture Oblivious, for a sculpture dedication and artist conversation at the Lutcher Theater, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 4. Dr. Sarah Boehme, Director of the Stark Museum of Art, will talk with Ostermiller about his artistic process, his influences, and his sculptures. The artist will also respond to questions from the audience.  A reception with refreshments will follow at the Stark Museum of Art, where Oblivious is installed at the entrance of the Museum. The Museum is at 712 Green Avenue in Orange.



FUMC gets historic dedication

 First United Methodist Church of Beaumont, 701 Calder Ave. in Beaumont, is now an Official United Methodist Historic Site.

William Hardt, Chair of the The Texas Annual Conference Commission on History and Archives, recently announced that:

“The Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church has designated the site of First United Methodist Church of Beaumont, Texas as an official site United Methodist historic site. This action has been confirmed by its registration with the General Commission on Archives and History of the United Methodist Church.”
