The month of November will bring us a multitude of major MMA events. They'll include a WEC event, two UFC events, including one with Brock Lesnar, and the return of MMA to CBS broadcast television -- the right way.
The first event to note is Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers live on CBS. This event will be broadcast live on CBS from Chicago on Saturday night, Nov. 7. It'll be MMA's first event on free television since EliteXC pushed the overrated Kimbo Slice to viewers before they folded.
The star attraction of the event is known as the most powerful fighter on the planet today, Fedor Emelianenko. The 30-1-1 Russian heavyweight fighter represents the best in MMA. His opponent will be top Strikeforce heavyweight contender, Brett "The Grim" Rogers. The undefeated 10-1 striker is on an absolute tear. His stunning upset of
Andrei Arlovski thrust him into the title spotlight.
Another fighter to look after is light heavyweight, Gegard Mousasi. The young 24 year old represents the new, complete fighter of today. He is set to face the one-dimensional standup fighter, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou.
The following Saturday, November 14 the UFC returns to England for UFC 105. This event will be aired to Americans for free on Spike TV. The main event will be a light heavyweight affair between UFC legend, Randy "The Natural" Couture and Philipino-American kickboxing fighter, Brandon "The Truth" Vera.
After faltering in his last two heavyweight bouts, one to Brock Lesnar and another to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Couture has elected to move down to the light heavyweight weight class. Randy Couture has held titles in both of these weight classes so it is an obvious move for him to give light heavyweight a try again.
The once budding star, Vera, is starting to regain some momentum after losing a string of fights years ago, so this faceoff with Couture is extremely important to him to maintain relevancy.
Another notable on the UFC 105 card is Houstonian, Mike "Quick" Swick as he faces Englishman, Dan Hardy. Swick missed the opportunity to fight in front of his home-state fans at UFC 103 in Dallas when a concussion suffered during training forced him to bow out.
That's not it for a particularly action packed week of MMA. Four days later on November 18th, the WEC holds a championship event, WEC 44: Brown vs. Aldo. The current WEC featherweight champion, Mike Thomas Brown looks to defend his title for a second time against Brazilian contender, Jose Aldo.
The interesting thing about Aldo is that his strongpoint is ground fighting, however all five of his WEC victories have been by technical knockout.
The following Saturday night, November 21, UFC 106 will be held. It will feature a UFC heavyweight title bout bout with the man people love to hate, Brock Lesnar. His opponent is underrated bruiser, Shane Carwin. Sadly, Carwin is not as well known as his 11-0 record should reflect.
This man represents big power. He has never gone past the first round of any bout; he's knocked out or submitted his opponent every time.
Carwin also represents a heavyweight on the upper end of the 206-265 lb. heavyweight range. This just may be what's needed to take out the seemingly indomitable, Lesnar.
As each event is held this column will provide previews and recaps of them so stay tuned for the action packed month of November.
