Health issues force Morrissey to cancel local show, tour

BEAUMONT — It's the old third strike and you’re out rule for Morrissey.

British singer and former Smiths frontman Morrissey has been forced to cancel his on-again, off again, tour of the United States. This includes his upcoming Beaumont appearance on April 12 at the Jefferson Theatre, which had been rescheduled twice from its original Dec. 1, 2012, date due to previous health issues with Morrissey and even his mother.

According to information from the Beaumont Civic Center, refunds for the Beaumont concert are available at the point of purchase.

According to a release from Morrissey's publicist, Lauren Papapietro, the 53-year-old Morrissey, was forced to call off the remaining 22 dates of his U.S. tour after suffering a bleeding ulcer, Barrett's esophagus and double pneumonia in recent months.

"Despite his best efforts to try to continue touring, Morrissey has to take a hiatus and will not be able to continue on the rest of the tour," Papapietro said in the release. "Morrissey thanks all of his fans for their well wishes and thoughts. Refunds for the remaining shows are available at point of purchase."

The original concert date, Dec. 1, 2012, was rescheduled to Feb. 16, 2013, due to health issues with Morrissey's mother which required her to be hospitalized.

Morrissey was forced to once again reschedule his five Texas tourdates from the week of Feb. 12 through Feb. 18, 2013, after a doctor ordered Morrissey to rest for two additional weeks following a string of postponements in late January and early February.

Morrissey, whose name is actually Steven Patrick Morrissey, is a well known English singer and lyricist whose career began in the 1970's punk scene where he formed the alternative rock band The Smiths with guitarist Johnny Marr, in 1982. The band released its debut self-titled album in February 1984, which peaked and number two on the UK charts and remained on the charts for 33 weeks.

His solo career has been nothing short of stellar, as critics and fans alike declare him to be one of the greatest lyricists in the world. The BBC has even referred to him as "one of the most influential figures in the history of British pop" and "Rolling Stone" magazine named his as one of the greatest vocalists of all time in a recent poll.
