The biggest rock festival in Southeast Texas is returning after a three-year hiatus.
Dog Jam, affectionately named for rock radio station Big Dog 106, is back this Saturday as the Trespass America Festival, featuring Five Finger Death Punch, rolls into town for a concert at Ford Pavilion in Beaumont. The gates open at 4 p.m., Saturday, and the concert begins at 5 p.m.
Along with Five Finger Death Punch, bands on this tour include Killswitch Engage, Pop Evil, Trivium, God Forbid, Emmure and Battlecross. Tickets are $22-$46 at all Ticketmaster outlets and the Ford Park box office.
The lineup is arguably the heaviest sounding collection of bands at any Dog Jam since 2007, which featured Korn, HellYeah, Five Finger Death Punch and Droid. In spite of that fact, tickets are moving well.
Five Finger Death Punch emerged in Los Angeles in 2005 and quickly served notice it was a force to be reckoned with through the release of its debut album, “Way of the Fist,” in July 2007. Fans were quick to take notice with the band’s aggressive sound, including growling vocals, roaring guitars and pounding bass and drums.
The band found commercial success with its sophomore effort, “War is the Answer,” released in September 2009, which peaked at number seven on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart and included the single and remake, “Bad Company.”
The band has continued its success with its October 2011 release of “American Capitalist,” which features the aggressive single “Under and Over It” and “Remember Everything,” which could almost be considered a 21st century power ballad.
When asked what keeps the band motivated and focused from album to album and endless touring, guitarist Jason Hook was quick to respond.
“It’s girls, duh,” Hooks said with a laugh during a recent telephone interview. “Actually, we’re driven to be successful. We do what we love, and we all really love making music. When you get a taste of something that can work, like creating music, it makes you want to do it even more, and that’s our goal.”
Five Finger Death Punch is headlining its first big summer festival, and Hook said the group was honored to take charge of the Trespass America Festival, which is sponsored by the UK magazine, Metal Hammer. The tour began July 13 and concludes Aug. 28 in Los Angeles, Calif.
Hook said he has been able to watch most of the bands perform and is always in awe of Killswitch Engage. He said the band everyone is talking about is Battlecross, which opens the show each day.
Battlecross, based out of Detroit, Mich., released its debut album, “Pursuit of Honor,” in August 2011 through Metal Blade Records. According to guitarist Hiran Deraniyagala, the band is making the most of this opportunity.
“This is a whole new experience for us,” Deraniyagala said in a telephone interview. “It’s our second national tour, but we’ve never done one on this scale before. We know we are going on stage early, but fans have been great. I’m so glad people are getting there early and supporting all of the bands.”
Deraniyagala stated each band, while heavy in its own way, is different from the rest of the bands on the tour which makes it a bonus for fans.
“I think we can fit in well with any hard rock and metal show out there,” he explained. “There are so many styles of metal on this tour, Battlecross can stand out from the others, and, as a fan, I like it that everything isn’t the same.”
Battlecross has been working on material for a future record, but Deraniyagala said the band is not done getting the word about the current album just yet.
As for Five Finger Death Punch, Hook said the band is appreciative of its fans as well, which is one reason why the band consistently releases new material approximately every two years.
“The old model bands used to work by was to release an album and tour for two or three years before making another one,” Hook explained. “It’s a conscious decision on our part to make new music and a new album about every two years.
