BCP presents Sarah Ruhl’s dark comedy “Dead Man’s Cell Phone”

BEAUMONT — Beaumont Community Players will present “Dead Man’s Cell Phone,” a dark comedy by Sarah Ruhl, directed by Michael Saar, for three weekends, opening Oct. 19.

“Dead Man’s Cell Phone,” which premiered in 2007, explores the ways technology both connects and divides us and the ways we memorialize the dead. The play opens with Jean (Laura Mackan) answering a stranger’s incessantly ringing cell phone in a quiet café. She soon realizes that the stranger, Gordon, (Scott Renick) is dead. She keeps Gordon’s phone and becomes entangled in his unsavory business dealings and the lives of his mother (Pepper Thompson), wife (Theresa Ravencraft), brother (Donny Avery) and mistress (Grace Mathis).

“Even though people are almost always reachable through cell phones and other technology today, it seems harder and harder to actually connect with one another. I love that this play explores this idea in a uniquely dark, twisted and hysterical way,” Saar said. “’Dead Man’s Cell Phone’ has its own unique vibe that we don’t often get in local theatre. While it is a bit of an absurdist comedy, the characters are very real and can go from absolutely hilarious to completely tragic in a moment.”

“Dead Man’s Cell Phone” is recommended for ages 18 and up due to adult language.

Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 19-20, Oct. 26-27 and Nov. 1-3, with a matinee at 2 p.m. Oct. 27. All performances will be in the Jerry L. McMillan Studio Theatre at Beaumont Community Players’ Betty Greenberg Center for the Performing Arts, 4155 Laurel Ave. in Beaumont. A free post-show discussion featuring the cast and crew and moderated by Andy Coughlan is planned after the Thursday, Nov. 1 performance.

Tickets are available for $18 for adults and $16 for seniors and students by calling (409) 833-4664 or online at beaumontcommunityplayers.com. Student rush tickets for college students will be $10 each on the day of each performance.
