BEAUMONT —
The Symphony of Southeast Texas (SOST) continues its 60th season celebration with the Master Series 2 concert, “A Taste of Italy,” at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Julie Rogers Theatre in Beaumont.
“We will pay tribute to the Italian culture of Beaumont with this concert,” said Music Director Chelsea Tipton. Musical selections for this concert include Italian elements, but are not necessarily by Italian composers, and each piece features a different component of Italy.
“I Crisantemi (Chrysanthemum),” by the great Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini, brings a melodic simplicity that is refreshing, according to Maestro Tipton. He also adds that the piece is a nice remembrance to the Symphony’s 60 year history during this milestone season.
Mozart’s “Sinfonia Concertante E-flat major,” will feature SOST soloists Whitney Bullock on viola and Matt Detrick on violin. The concertante style began in early Italian music and features soloists who exchange musically thematic ideas with the orchestra. “This piece will highlight and show appreciation for the wonderful talent these two soloists have given to the Symphony,” said Tipton.
Mendelssohn’s “Symphony No. 4,” also known as the Italian Symphony, was written while the German composer was visiting Italy. The piece represents the Italian culture seen through his eyes.
Maestro Tipton invites all guests to arrive early at 6:30 p.m. for a pre-concert talk. The performance will then begin at 7:30 p.m. Single ticket prices range from $15 to $36; senior, student and group discounts are available. To purchase tickets or get more information, go to www.sost.org or contact the Symphony office at (409) 892-2257.
This concert is sponsored by Entergy.
An added “sparkling” attraction for the four Master Series concerts during this milestone season includes a diamond jewelry piece give-away. A representative will draw one ticket from the stubs submitted upon entrance to the theater on concert night. The lucky concert-goer holding that ticket will be presented with a beautiful piece of diamond jewelry. The winner must be present to claim the prize. The jewelry prize for the Nov. 3 concert is generously donated by Heartfield Designs.
The Symphony of Southeast Texas celebrates “A Sparkling 60th Season of Symphonic Sounds” in 2012-2013. Since the inaugural performance of the Beaumont Symphony Orchestra on May 12, 1953, the organization has continued to uphold its mission of presenting educational, entertaining, and culturally enriching programs of the highest artistic quality to the Southeast Texas community.
