A new spin on the old mixed drink recipe book, “The Daily Cocktail: 365 Intoxicating Drinks and the Outrageous Events That Inspired Them,” is a laughing riot of a guide to the world of fancy, fun drinks.
Each page features a mixed beverage recipe and the story that inspired the drink. In a calendar format, the drinking guide kicks off Jan. 1 with the Bloody Mary and concludes Dec. 31 with the Happy New Year.
Each day’s drink grows more exciting with title’s like the Duke’s Cocktail — a mix of orange and lemon juices, Triple Sec, one whole egg and Champagne — and the Woo Woo, peach Schnapps, vodka and cranberry juice.
My favorite part of the book is the history lesson/Trivial Pursuit type information that comes along with the drinking delight.
I have to admit, I had a hearty laugh at the idea of drinking a Buttafuco. As the story goes, the tequila and cherry liqueur mixer, was inspired by the Nov. 15, 1993 sentencing of Buttafuco for the statutory rape of Amy Fisher, better known as the Long Island Lolita.
The story lines that go with the drinks are easy to read and great points of conversation for any adult gathering.
Most drink recipes come with pictures and the reference index in the back will help with any complicated questions about liqueurs and necessary glassware.
The “Daily Cocktail” was written by Dalyn A. Miller and Larry Donovan. The delightfully fresh guide is under $20 and well worth the dough for the endless supply of recipes.
