Ozen topples Vidor, 29-14

BEAUMONT — The Ozen Panthers took advantage of eight Vidor turnovers and beat the Pirates 29-14 Friday night in District 22-4A action at Cardinal Stadium.

The Panthers (3-6, 2-4), who outgained Vidor, 425-319 in total yards, jumped out to a 29-0 lead before the Pirates (1-8, 0-6) responded with 14 unanswered points to finish the contest.

Ozen’s Javon Dartez paced all game rushers with 175 yards on 22 carries while Panther receiver Cameron Ball hauled in five receptions for 122 yards and a touchdown.

Theron Reynolds led Vidor’s ground game with 78 yards on 12 totes while Bo Pillsbury stretched for 60 yards on five carries. Derek Worthy made the most of his limited amount of rushes, taking the ball eight times for 48 yards.

Chris Teinert (5-for-10, 84 yards) replaced Vidor starting quarterback Roman Franklin in the second quarter after Franklin sustained an injury.

Bret Harris caught three passes for 66 yards for the Pirates.

A 20-yard pass from Cory Lewis to Willie Jefferson gave the Panthers an early 6-0 edge with 3:21 left in the first. Ball hauled in a 35-yard pass from Lewis less than a minute later to stretch the lead to 14-0.

Broderick Joseph scored from 4 yards out with 4:13 left to give the Panthers a 20-0 edge at intermission.

Galvin booted a 26-yard field goal with 6:42 left in the third and Lorenzo Patterson scored a 16-yard rushing touchdown to give the Panthers a 29-0 lead with 1:35 left in the third.

Vidor broke the shutout with 10 seconds left in the third when Corey McGee scored on a 32-yard rushing gain, and the Pirates converted the two-point pass.

Teinert topped it off with a two-yard scoring keeper, but the pass failed and the Panthers held on for the victory.
