Cop to chiropractor: Call him Dr. Johnson

GROVES — Tim Johnson’s own lower back injury, a baseball byproduct, steered his career plans. But the doctor was previously called “officer.”

The man who worked in correctional facilities and served as both a Port Arthur and a Groves police officer went back to school to receive a chiropractic degree. He purchased the practice of Dr. Greg Hollier, who retired and has opened his office at 4820 Twin City Highway since January. The Groves Chamber of Commerce & Tourist Center recently hosted an open house for his office.

Born in Groves, he now lives in Port Neches. He played baseball at Port Neches-Groves High School and at Lon Morris College in Jacksonville. Because of his pain from sports, he visited a chiropractor and began to “bone up.”

“I always wanted to be a chiropractor,” he said.

He said his methods are a way to eliminate musculoskeletal pain, in muscles and bones. The most common cases he sees are back pain, headaches and neck pain, Johnson said. His patients often come in with pain in joints or pain shooting down their arms and legs. Some have degenerative disc disease from the aging process, as in bony formations along the spine that irritates nerves. Other common cases involve injuries from improper lifting or auto accidents, and he deals with “slips, trips and falls,” Johnson said.

After years in law enforcement and work with the Texas Juvenile Correctional Facility,  Larry Gist State Jail and Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Johnson said he decided to fulfill his dream. He received his degree from the Texas Chiropractic College in Pasadena.

He said what he loves about his work now is watching the effects of his work.

“People come in with pain and headaches and they leave without them,” he said.

Johnson is married to Staci and has two children. Caleb is 18 and Colin is 13.
