Schools assess Ike damage

Local school districts are assessing damage and working with personnel and contractors to repair damages. Here is a roundup of district conditions:

Lamar State College-Port Arthur
Despite a “few hickeys” the Lamar State College-Port Arthur campus came through Ike with a good grade.
“Considering everything, it’s looking quite well,” Tom Neal, vice president for student services, said Wednesday.
He said the school is waiting for the community to stabilize before any decisions are made about the date classes will resume.
Sam Monroe, president, said there was no catastrophic damage but the campus did suffer some roof damage and blowing rain damage, but no flooding. Power was not restored by Wednesday afternoon, he said.

Lamar University/Lamar Institute of Technology
As progress continues in restoring the campuses, university/institute officials are considering dates for classes to resume. Officials will base this decision on when a majority of staff and students can return to the region. Officials may set the date for the middle of next week, according to school officials. Power is restored to both campuses and Cardinal Village. Work continues to restore power to the Montagne Center.

Port Arthur Independent School District
Ike caused more wind than water damage to Port Arthur Independent School District properties, Mark Porterie, assistant superintendent, said Wednesday.
“It was better than Rita,” he said, comparing the two Gulf Coast hurricanes. “We have maintenance crews on the scene.”
Porterie said the administration building, DeQueen Elementary and Wilson at Franklin school showed damage. He said power must be on before school gets back in session and contractors are at work to get the schools ready for students.

Port Neches-Groves Independent School District
Damages are minimal according to initial surveys, but power is needed to make a full assessment, the district’s web site reports. The majority of classrooms do not appear to be damaged, though a few did sustain broken glass and/or water damage. The district cannot project a return date until power is restored to campuses.

Nederland Independent School District
Clean up continues at all facilities. Entergy crews and tree trimming personnel are working in the city and around the schools. A start date will be determined after power is restored.
Damage to district facilities can still be described as minimal, according to the NISD web site. District personnel and contractors are making repairs and cleaning the trash from grounds. Typical damage includes awnings, windows and tree damage.
