The Salvation Army asks people who want to help those affected by Hurricane Gustav to visit www.salvationarmyusa.org or call 1-800-SAL-ARMY. Monetary donations are needed to meet survivors’ most immediate needs. A $100 donation will feed a family of four for two days, provide two cases of drinking water and one household cleanup kit, containing brooms, mops, buckets and cleaning supplies. The Salvation Army is currently not accepting donations of clothing and furniture for storm victims, please forward these donations to The Salvation Army Family Store nearest you.
Men and women, standing in a long line at Sterling Pruitt Park in Beaumont, waited as the Jacksonville, Fla., Salvation Army Canteen began the day’s lunch. The noon temperatures promised a warmer day, but the hungry residents of Beaumont waited patiently in the heat. For many Hurricane Ike-affected citizens, the lunch of burritos and sides was something they lo oked forward to.
“Y’all are doing a real good job,” said an elderly man waiting in line. “I’ve been coming here every day, and the food is real good. Thank you.”
Serving an average of 20,000 from 24 canteens, Salvation Army Canteen Crews have become a regular sight in Beaumont and its surrounding communities. On Saturday, The Salvation Army Volunteers served 17,408 meals, 11,075 snacks and 18,573 drinks as well as 128 instances of emotional and spiritual care. With six days of service to the c ommunity, more than 96,000 meals have already been served.
Sunday, The Salvation Army canteens are expected to be the same areas, with the exception of Bevil Oaks. The community of Bevil Oaks has regained power and the need has dropped considerably in that area.
