BEAUMONT — This year’s South Texas State Fair is another casualty of Hurricane Ike. On Friday, the Young Men’s Business League announced the annual festivities normally held at Ford Park are canceled.

YMBL organizers said Ford Park will continue for some time to be a staging area for Hurricane-related disaster recovery equipment. Additionally, hotel rooms are scarce for vendors coming into the area to set up midway rides and fair food booths.

Local volunteers are working to get their lives and businesses back in order. Without their efforts, fair officials said, it is not possible put on a successful fair.

Some residents to begin receiving FEMA mobile homes Peter Lembessis, public information officer with the Federal Emergency Management Agency said the process has begun for residents in Jefferson and Orange Counties who have lost their homes and qualify to receive mobile homes while their homes are being rebuilt or repaired.

Environmentalist won’t know Ike’s effect for long time For the past week, a joint coalition comprised of the U.S. Coast Guard, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, the Texas General Land Office and the EPA began canvassing the area, looking mainly for oil spills that are a potential threat to the environment.

Time running out to claim family pet The Humane Society of Southeast Texas has pets displaced or turned in after Hurricane Ike. Saturday, Sept. 27 is the last day to claim them. The humane society will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

The Central Middle School Band capped off a successful year by competing in the Solo and Ensemble Contest on May 5th. Forty-eight students brought home 66 medals. Band members who won honors are: Danny Abdullah, Syrina Akbari, Abigail Albright, Max Barclay, Joel Bardwell, Jordan Bardwell, Brandon Baumgardner, Anthony Bennett, James Brindza, Cullen Cessna, Vanessa Daigle, Collin Elliott ,Dyan Emerson, Cyle Hubbard, Colin Jackson, Jennifer Jones, Jordan Jones, Jase Keel, Jessica Koons, Marissa Licatino, Todd Luke, Kade McCorvy, Jordan Mitchell, Kelby Myers, Mason Ouzts, Sara Pierce, Kayla Prestridge, Daniela Rodriguez, Noah Ross, Shae Sanders, Chandler Smith, Brian Speight, Erin Stilley, Arriana Torres and Tommy Truong Central's Band Directors are Joe Vargas and Michelle Melancon. On May 15th, the Band will hold its final performances of the year. They will play in Central's auditorium at 9 AM. Later that evening, they will be part of the Nederland ISD Band Pageant at the Performing Arts Center.
