BEAUMONT — BEAUMONT — Someone’s lost family pet may be ready to claim — but hurry — time is running out.
The Humane Society of Southeast Texas has pets displaced or turned in after Hurricane Ike. Saturday, Sept. 27 is the last day to claim them. The humane society will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Mary Prewitt, state director for The Humane Society Southwest Region, Kansas office said the Southeast Texas branch has 150 dogs and 65 cats.
“Some owners will be back. We don’t know if the other owners will be back,” Prewitt said. “It’s much better than Katrina (the number of displaced pets). We prefer the owners come to the shelter and bring a photo of the pet with them. Veterinarian bills and proof of ownership will help. And we ask for a good description of the animal before we let them go back and look.”
Prewitt said she encourages people to come to the shelter as soon as possible before the pets are shipped out to various humane societies throughout the country.
