Ship captain describes day of oil spill

PORT ARTHUR — The captain of the Eagle Otome told of the events leading up to a Jan. 23 collision that closed the Sabine-Neches waterway and spilled hundreds of thousands of gallons of oil into the channel during a formal hearing on Tuesday.

Master Pallava Shukla fielded questions by U.S. Coast Guard Cmdr. Kathleen Moore then from Rob Jones of the National Transportation Safety Board before a team of attorneys, representing the numerous entities involved in the incident, began their questions.

The New Deli, India native said he “was getting a little concerned” when the 807-foot Eagle Otome ship began to shear towards the western bank of the channel near the Martin Luther King Bridge.
