Jack of all trades builds business

— Six buildings near the corner of Kent Ave. and Twin City Highway in Nederland were built by Jack Faris over the years including Faris Technical Institute, a technical school.

Faris Technical Institute offers computer aided drafting, medical administrative assistant, legal administrative, general business administrative assistant, and individual courses at the institute in Nederland and online.

"Cad is online now and we should have the rest online by September," he said.

The school's mission statement is "to help students develop responsible attitudes, confidence, and the technical skills necessary to obtain a position, maintain that position, and enhance that position in the business, medical or legal fields. The faculty and administration are dedicated to serving the people of Texas, especially Southeast Texas, including employers and prospective employees. Because technology is changing so rapidly, our faculty and administration are engaged in an ongoing learning process. Because of this, our students enter the business, medical and legal markets equipped to fill employers’ needs," as their website explains at www.faristechnicalinstitute.com.

Although Faris didn't start the business himself, he is there anytime he is needed. Faris' wife, Lois started the school.

"He is a technical person here in the school," Lois said.

"I'm also the trash picker-upper," he said laughing.
