Groves’ Lincoln Avenue speed limit to drop

GROVES — A high volume of pedestrian traffic coupled with a narrow street has caused city council to drop the speed limit to 15 mph on Lincoln Avenue from 39th Street to Coolidge Street.

City Council approved the action on Monday. Groves City Marshal Jeff Wilmore brought the issue to council because of the high volume of pedestrian traffic at various times of the day coupled with the fact the road narrows with angle parking on both sides of the avenue, he said.

“Beginning around Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, whether there’s a church service or funeral service, there’s traffic congestion,” Wilmore said. “Then, as you head north there’s the dance studio. People are dropping kids off and picking them up at dusk. There’s more and more traffic as you travel, at different times of the day. Then there’s people who are shopping, walking across the street as the road becomes narrow it’s dangerous.”

Wilmore said that due to the specifics of the issue and the fact the traffic congestion occurs at different times of the day, the speed limit change was necessary.

“It is a unique situation with multiple areas of concern at various times of the day,” he said.

The city marshal said a speed bump will also be added on Lincoln Avenue and Capitol Boulevard.

The new speed limit will not go into effect until the signs are erected. D. Sosa, city manager for the city of Groves, said the new speed limit signs are not ready to be put in place at this time.

“We’re still a way out on this,” Sosa said of the issue.
