Lamar State-PA receives $57,000 state grant

PORT ARTHUR — Future students at Lamar State College-Port Arthur will benefit from a $56,985 grant the college recently received from the Texas Comptroller's Job Building Fund.

The grant will be used to purchase simulated medical dispensing systems equipment for Lamar State's Licensed Vocational Nursing and Registered Nursing programs.

The money was part of $3.51 million doled out to colleges in Texas to help train students for careers in fast-growing, high-demand occupations.

Schools receiving the money must provide matching funds in the form of cash, equipment, materials, supplies and/or personnel costs.

The Comptroller's office selected grant recipients based on each project's potential economic return to the state and on endeavors that involve dual-credit programs with local high schools or cooperative arrangements with other colleges.

Priority was given to projects that target high-demand occupations and new or emerging industries.

Lamar State's next nurse-training class will begin training in the Summer I term, which starts June 7.

The college currently is accepting student registration for the two summer terms and the 2010 fall semester.

“The short summer terms allow students to complete courses in just a few weeks, rather than several months, like in a long semester,” said Tom Neal, vice president for Student Services at the college. “Summer terms also can keep people on track for their graduation goals and reduce the number of hours they have to take in the fall or spring.”

Neal said the summer terms also can help recent high school graduates get a jump start on their college education by earning up to six credit hours in each summer session.

“High school co-enrollment students also can take courses at the college during the summer,” Neal said.

The Summer/Fall schedule is available in the Admission Advising Office and the Admission and Records Office on the third floor of the LSC-PA Student Center, at the Help Desk in the Student Center lobby of the Student Center, or on-line at: www.lamarpa.edu.

All students must be admitted to the college before registering for classes.

Continuing students not subject to Texas Success Initiative test restrictions and students who passed all parts of the THEA or ASSET tests can register using their personal identification numbers.

All other students must talk with an admission advisor prior to registering for classes. A PIN number also is required for on-line registration.

Students can add or drop classes through on-line registration after payment is made to the LSC-PA Business Office.
