A batch of mosquitoes collected near Groves have tested positive for the West Nile virus.
Kevin Sexton, mosquito control director for Jefferson County, said the batch, collected Aug. 7, was located at Taft Avenue and Willow Street. The area is near Taft Elementary School, technically located in Port Arthur but in Port Neches-Groves Independent School District.
Mosquitoes are tested by the Texas State Department of Health in Austin, he added.
This is the fourth area in Jefferson County where West Nile infected mosquitoes have been located this season. There have been two areas in Port Arthur where mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile in the past few weeks, Grannis Avenue and West Fifth Street and El Paso Avenue and 19th Street. Last week infested mosquitoes were reported at Park Street and Saxe Street which is not far from Lamar University in Beaumont.
There have been no reported human cases in the county, Sexton said.

“A person does not change their character overnight,” said Veazey, a retired Port Arthur Independent School District teacher. “We do not accept that she just walked into a room and started beating on a kid. Her students are her life. She wouldn’t do that.”
