Isaac moves toward Florida; tropical depression 10 forms

— Tropical Storm Isaac moved across the Leeward Islands on Wednesday with a possible track toward the eastern Gulf of Mexico or Florida by next week.

The National Weather Service-Lake Charles is continuing to monitor the storm which is expected to intensify later this week or weekend into a hurricane, Roger Erickson, NWS-Lake Charles warning coordination meteorologist, said in an e-mail.

“However, the steering currents for that scenario are still a long ways off and we will need to stay vigilant to see if anything changes as we approach this weekend,” Erickson added.

At 4 p.m. Wednesday, Isaac was moving west at about 22 mph with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph.

The government of the Dominican Republic has issued a hurricane warning for the south coast from Isla Saona westward to the Haiti-Dominican Republic southern border and a hurricane watch has been issued for all of Haiti.

A hurricane warning means that hurricane conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area. A warning is typically issued 36 hours before the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force winds, conditions that make outside preparations difficult or dangerous. Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion.

The NWS is also keeping an eye on newly formed tropical depression No. 10 further east in the tropical Atlantic Ocean. However at this point the forecast keeps this system in the Atlantic Ocean through early next week. It is expected to strengthen to a tropical storm late Wednesday or on Thursday. If a tropical storm does form it will be named Joyce.
