— From a curio cabinet in his Port Arthur living room, Jimmy Davis carefully cradled in his hand a World War II era Space Sprayer.
"During the war they were saving metal," Davis said of the Gulf Oil brand bug sprayer made from a heavy duty cardboard material with a wooden plunger and glass receptacle. Davis, who retired from Gulf Oil June 3, 1985, after 35 years of service as a machinist and later a supervisor, has spent years collecting Gulf Oil memorabilia. He has items as varied as oil and insect spray, metal signs, furniture polish, car cleaner, lubricants, tube repair kits, clocks, drinking glasses and maps.
The collection includes what might be considered unusual items in today's world such as pieces of wax taken from the Gulf Oil commisary with the words "Gulf quality bread" fro bakery items made on site as well as a logo emblazed marble, vintage toys and a 1953 calendar.
