PORT ARTHUR —
A man is behind bars on several charges including assault of a public servant after an incident outside a convenience store on Sunday.
Port Arthur Police officers were dispatched at about 12:35 a.m. June 18 to B.J.’s Convenience Store, 1201 Seventh St., in reference to a person reporting that someone had threatened to shoot her.
Upon arrival, the complainant pointed out a man who was standing by the front door of the business as the suspect, according to a press release from Port Arthur Police Department.
As officers attempted to detain the man, he was reportedly noncompliant and began yelling at the officers. He then began struggling with officers and reportedly struck one of the officers with a closed fist.
While the officers were attempting to gain control over the man, a large crowd began to gather and an unknown person sprayed the officers with a chemical substance. The officers were able to keep their composure and take the male into custody.
As the officers placed handcuffs on the man, a .45 caliber gun fell from his pocket. It was determined that the handgun had been reported stolen.
The man was transported to the Jefferson County Correctional Facility and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by felon, possession of a stolen firearm and assault on a public servant.
