'Grandma Ghee' helps with heart, faith

— Walking up to the door of Executive Hair Design in Port Arthur, Olivia Ghee has a man, Henry, following her. Henry is homeless.

Ghee picks Henry up to get his hair cut and have his face shaved as often as she can.

As they walk in to the hair studio, the owner, Paulette Lewis yells, "Grandma Ghee!" "Grandma Ghee is what we affectionately call her," Lewis said.

Grandma Ghee helped Henry get food stamps, she keeps his receipts, brings him to doctor's appointment, brings him grocery shopping, and buys him clothes when he needs it.

"We try to keep him clean," Ghee said.

"There is nothing more rewarding to her Henry say 'Grandma,'" Lewis said.

Henry is not the only person Ghee helps out day-to-day. She also helps less educated people write checks, paying bills, and completing paperwork. She donates clothing for the needy and buys groceries for families that have a hard time making ends meet.

"This is my heart, I don't do this for praise," Ghee said humbly.

Ghee delivers 21 meals two times a month. "I go where I know there are people who really need it," she said.

She is a member at St. Paul United Methodist Church where she is on many different boards and a lay speaker.

Ghee is also part of a women's outreach group, Unique Ladies. The group consists of 25 women from 11 churches. "Different denominations work together as a group to help the needy, visit the sick, pray, and try to serve the community where they most need it," she said.

The group's next big community project is a Hawaiian Luau. They are raising money for a little girl, Alyssa M. Drake, with Dystonia. "We are helping the family out with travel expenses," she said. She travels to Houston a lot for doctor's appointments. The luau will be on August 19th f rom 3:30 until 6:30pm.

Grandma Ghee loves to surprise friends with meals, volunteer at the Zachary Breaux Jazz Festival, and she plays bridge with friends once a month. "That is my pastime," she said.

She is retired from Port Arthur Independent School District after 29 years of being an elementary school councilor.

Traveling is also a pastime of Grandma Ghee's. She has a farm in Calvert, Texas. "I walk the fence line at the farm looking for injured cattle and broken fence," she said. She buys feed assists in repairs, clears brush, brands cows, fixes fences, trims trees, and paints the house on the farm. "I enjoy it," she said. The farm land has been in her family for 200 years.

When she isn't working on a project on the farm, Ghee is still helping other people. "I mentor young women that don't know how to budget for groceries and things," she said.

"Grandma, I don't think you can name all the people you help with. I don't know where the energy comes from but you've got it," Lewis said.

Ghee has two children, five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. She recently went to watch her great granddaughter dance at dance recital.

Grandma Ghee still drives and likes to travel. She walks a mile a day.

"I think she is an awesome humanitarian. Helping the less fortunate, and even the fortunate. It doesn't matter the color of your skin, background, or anything. I just applaud her or that," Lewis said.

"I have energy and I have to use it," Ghee said smiling.
