NEDERLAND —
Nederland Police are warning the public of a higher than normal volume of counterfeit money being passed at local businesses.
The money in question are $50 and $100 bills and Nederland Police Chief Darrell Bush said the counterfeit money is initially difficult to detect.
Police believe the person or persons making the counterfeit money is actually bleaching a $5 bill and copying/scanning either a $50 or $100 bill onto the $5 bill.
“As you look at the counterfeit money it’s darker in color and slightly smaller due to the money shrinking during the bleaching process,” according to a press release from NPD. “The counterfeit detector pen shows that the paper is good so you can’t use that alone to determine whether or not the money is counterfeit.”
There are several ways to determine if the money is legit though.
Look closely at the security thread and hold the bill up to the light. You will notice that it says USA FIVE instead of USA 50 or USA 100. The water mark located on the right side of the bill, if you look closely, will see that it’s distorted and that it’s actually an image of President Lincoln instead of President Grant who appears on a $50 or Benjamin Franklin who appears on a $100.
Anyone with information about that may assist in the apprehension of the persons involved in counterfeiting or passing these bills is encouraged to contact Detective Mendoza with the Nederland Police Department at 722-4965.
