NEDERLAND —
McNeill Insurance Agency has been a part of Nederland’s history for many years.
The agency, founded in 1937 by James H. McNeill, celebrated 75 years in business in April and in May Jimmy McNeill, grandson of the elder McNeill, was named Small Business Person of the Year by Nederland Chamber of Commerce.
“I’m honored,” McNeill said from his office on 12th Street. “With all of the businesses in Nederland, the chamber board chose McNeill Insurance Agency. I’m very flattered by this.”
Jinni Akins, president/CEO of the Nederland Chamber of Commerce, explained that the agency is one of the oldest businesses in the city.
“They are a prime example of how a small business can thrive and grow in a community like Nederland,” Jinni Akins, president/CEO of the Nederland Chamber of Commerce said of McNeill’s.
McNeill Insurance Agency, once located on Boston Avenue, moved to its current location in the mid-1950s and in 1951 Jerry McNeill, Jimmy’s father, joined the team. In 1971 Charles Lankford came on board and Jimmy joined in 1981.
But McNeill doesn’t care to take credit for the near century of the successful business.
“I didn’t do all of this by myself,” he said referring to his family and Lankford.
McNeill Insurance Agency is an independent insurance agency dealing with property and causality insurance.
