— Beaumont-Port Arthur area employers expect to hire at a steady pace during the second quarter of 2010, according to the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey.
From April to June, 13 percent of the companies interviewed plan to hire more employees,
while 7 percent expect to reduce their payrolls. Another 72 percent expect to maintain their current staff levels and 8 percent are not certain of their hiring plans. This yields a Net Employment Outlook of 6 percent.
“Hiring levels in our area appear to be stronger compared with last quarter when the Net Employment Outlook was 3 percent,” said Manpower spokesperson Tracy Dovalina. “In addition, employers are less optimistic about hiring activity as compared with one year ago, when the Net Employment Outlook was 13 percent.”
For the coming quarter, job prospects appear best in Durable Goods Manufacturing, Wholesale & Retail Trade and Information. Employers in Nondurable Goods Manufacturing plan to reduce staffing levels, while hiring in Construction, Transportation & Utilities, Professional & Business Services, Education & Health Services, Leisure & Hospitality, Other Services and Government is expected to remain unchanged.
Of the 18,000 U.S. employers surveyed, 16 percent expect to increase their staff levels during
the second quarter, while 8 percent expect to reduce their payrolls. Seventy-three percent expect no change in hiring, and 3 percent are undecided about their Quarter 2 2010 hiring plans. The next Manpower Employment Outlook Survey will be released on June 8, 2010 to report hiring expectations for Quarter 3 2010.
