Nederland sells land to NEDC for possible Sunoco project

NEDERLAND — A 255-acre piece of land near the city’s old landfill has changed ownership.

Nederland City Council approved the sale of the property to the Nederland Economic Development Corporation for $1.475 million during Monday’s meeting. The sale also comes with the right of first refusal on an additional tract of 614 acres of undeveloped property.

City Attorney Chris Duque said the attorneys for the parties involved are in the process of finalizing all documents and the issue is subject to final legal review.

While city leaders did not shed light on the fate of the property, NEDC will meet at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the NEDC office, 1903 Atlanta Ave., to discuss the sale of the 255-acres of land to Sunoco Partners Marketing and Terminals L.P. for the purpose of economic development and construction and operation of a industrial bulk product terminal, dock facilities and related improvements.

Duque said the city has been working on the details of the sale of land for the past several weeks. The project, he said, would benefit not only the community but the surrounding areas as well.

The land deal and possible project are not related to Keystone Pipeline Co., he said in a previous interview.

Last month city council approved a temporary road access agreement with Keystone Pipeline Co. for a segment of the 1,700-mile pipeline which ends at Sunoco.
