BEAUMONT —
A Stiles Unit corrections officer is in stable but critical condition after he was stabbed in the eye area with an unknown object by a violent offender.
The incident occurred at about 1:13 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4 as administrative segregation offender Rey Barrera removed his hand restraints, exited his cell and assaulted 44-year-old Officer David Logan at the Stiles Unit, according to a press release from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
Administrative segregation means the offender is in s single cell and separated from the general population, Jason Clark, public information officer with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, said. The offender spends approximately 22 hours a day in his cell and gets out for shower and recreation.
Offenders can be placed in administrative segregation if they are escape risks, prison gang members, or attack staff members and other members, etc. This offender, she said, is in administrative segregation because is has a history off assaulting officers.
After the attack, Officer Logan administered chemical agents and pushed Barrera back into his cell and closed the door. Additional security personnel responded and provided assistance. Officer Logan was evaluated on the unit level and then transported to Baptist Hospital in Beaumont by ambulance. He was then transported by life flight to Hermann Memorial Hospital, Houston, for additional treatment.
Logan has been employed by the TDCJ since July 23. The TDCJ received Barrera on Feb. 26, 1998, from El Paso County to serve a 115-year cumulative sentence for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Robbery, Attempted Murder, and Murder with Intent to Cause Death.
Additional sentences from Brazoria County include Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Possession of a Deadly Weapon in a Penal Institution, and Assault of a Public Servant. Rey faces additional charges for the attack on Officer Logan.
Barrera has been moved off the unit and transferred to another prison. The Office of Inspector General-TDCJ visited the unit and investigating the incident on Wednesday.
