KENEFICK, Texas — Authorities say they've found a suspect in the shootings of two southeast Texas sheriff's deputies dead.
The shooting happened about 6 a.m. Tuesday in the Woodland Hills subdivision, about 5 miles north of Dayton and 40 miles northeast of Houston.
A sheriff's spokesman says the suspected gunman was found outside a nearby house dead of a single gunshot wound, but it's unclear if the wound was self-inflicted or from police gunfire.
The Liberty County Sheriff's Office identified the deputies as 40-year-old R.E. Evans and 32-year-old Jeremy Marcantel. Evans was treated for his wounds at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston and released. Marcantel remains hospitalized there in stable condition with rounds to the head and upper body.
Both were wearing protective vests.
Sheriff's Cpl. Hugh Bishop says the deputies were investigating reports of gunfire when they were fired upon.
