PORT ARTHUR —
A small section of Terminal Road near West 18th Street in Port Arthur was blocked off Monday after residual oil contained inside a ditch at Motiva Port Arthur Refinery leaked out near the fence line, said Verna Rutherford, communications manager at Motiva.
Rutherford said the road closure was only a precautionary measure and no evacuations in the nearby neighborhood were necessary.
“The line has been shut down, and there is no health hazard or cause for alarm to the community,” Rutherford said. “Motiva is in the process of cleaning up the leak and making repairs.”
The cause for the leak is unknown but will be investigated by the refinery. “After we look at what caused it, efforts will be made to minimize anything like this in the future,” Rutherford said.
The city of Port Arthur will reopen Terminal Road when it is deemed safe to do so.
