PORT ARTHUR —
The Greater Port Arthur Chamber of Commerce held a member showcase Thursday afternoon for its newest members, but the chamber has another way to show off its members now: a mobile application.
The chamber is now a part of the My Chamber App developed by Application Development and Marketing Inc., said Bill McCoy, president of the Port Arthur Chamber of Commerce.
The app, which can be downloaded for free on the iPhone, iPad, Android and BlackBerry, is a chamber of commerce directory. It uses location technology to find the chamber of commerce near you, and local chambers can promote their businesses and events through the app.
McCoy said the company developed the app at no cost to the chamber. The app has several categories to choose from, including shopping, dining, accommodations, transportation, government, education and automotive.
Sew-N-Sew’s would be one of the businesses included on the chamber’s app. The sewing shop joined the chamber membership in September when it moved to a new location on Twin City Highway, said Cindy Drawhorn, owner of Sew-N-Sew’s, at the new member showcase.
Drawhorn said she added at least 100 new customers to her email database the first month the shop was open at the new location and continues to add new customers every day. Setting up a table at the member showcase was another way for her shop to get exposure, she said.
At Sew-N-Sew’s, you can get various items embroidered and sewing equipment, like the Brother sewing machine Drawhorn had on display at the new member showcase. The store offers fabrics, materials and maintenance for Brother and TinLizzie products, as well.
Silva Staffing, a long-time member of the Port Arthur Chamber of Commerce, sponsored the new member showcase alongside Chevron Phillips Chemical Co., JK Chevrolet, Echo Maintenance, Complete Staffing, Infinity Staffing Solutions and Dana’s Custom Jewelry.
Whitney Vanwinkle, Silva staffing coordinator, said the full service staffing agency came out Thursday to support the community and network with new and old faces.
Silva Staffing helps people find jobs in various fields, including industrial work, construction and office management.
Subaru, Luby’s, Lamar State College-Port Arthur and Max Bowl were a few more businesses that attended the new member showcase at the Holiday Inn on Jimmy Johnson Boulevard.
