Nederland to survey residents

NEDERLAND — Nederland city residents will soon be asked for their opinions on city services via the 2012 Community Survey.

The surveys should be arriving in mailboxes across the city on Monday. Responses of the confidential survey are due back no later than Aug. 31.

Nederland City Manager Chris Duque said the survey gives citizens an opportunity to provide feedback on a wide variety of topics from public safety to infrastructure including streets to quality of life, etc. The more surveys citizens take time to complete and return, the better data the city will have to review.

“This survey allows for people to give feedback,” Duque said. “Some have this opinion that government doesn’t listen and here’s an opportunity for your input.”

The survey asks citizens to rate the perceptions of the city, ideas on growth in the city, problems, public safety, streets and infrastructure, city services, parks and recreation and taxes to name a few categories. There are also questions regarding number of years lived in the city and ages and number of people in the household and such as well as a section for the resident to add comments.

Results will be reviewed in-house, Duque said, and presented to council during a meeting either in September or October. The results will be posted online.

Duque said the city considered doing a phone survey but phone surveys costly and due to the fact that less people are familiar with or have access to the Internet, they elected not to use online surveying.

The cost of the survey is $8,500 with the majority of the cost going toward shipping, he added.

Persons with questions regarding the survey can call the city at 723-1503 for more information.
