Splash park may open to PN residents only

PORT NECHES — PORT NECHES — Property owners and residents in Port Neches will likely have a special day set aside for them to use the city’s splash park when warmer weather returns next year.

Months of research and discussion led city leaders to consider an ordinance reserving Saturdays for Port Neches residents and/or property owners to use the park during June through August. The issue is on the agenda for the 4 p.m. meeting on Thursday, Dec. 17.

City Manager Andrè Wimer said council debated whether to restrict usage for a single day or few hours on multiple days.

“Council felt it would be easier to administer if simply one day a week in terms of operability,” Wimer said.

If approved, access to the splash park on those Saturdays would require one of the following forms of identification: Valid State of Texas drives licenses or identification card indicating a Port Neches address, current City of Port Neches utility bill, Jefferson County Appraisal District property ownership document with a valid State of Texas driver’s license or identification card.

City council authorized a survey of patrons to the park during the summer months and learned that fro  21.7 percent or 2,276 of the Splash Park’s visitors hailed from Port Arthur followed by 16.6 percent or 1,739 for visitors from Nederland. Port Neches residents came in third with 14.9 percent of the visits or 1,558 while Beaumont brought in 11.6 percent or 1,219 visitors.

Saturday was the most popular day to visit the park, according to survey results. A total of 24.7 percent of the visits or 2,581 people visited on Saturday followed by Sunday with 17.9 percent of the visits or 1,878. A total of 13.8 percent or 1,441 people went to the park on Fridays.

The survey was for the period from June 11 through Aug. 12.

The Splash Park is located on Grigsby in Port Neches Riverfront Park.
