Child remains hospitalized following Vidor ATV crash

VIDOR — A 10-year-old child, injured in an all-terrain vehicle accident in Vidor on Tuesday, remains in the pediatric intensive care unit at UTMB-Galveston, according to Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Stephanie Davis.

According to the ICU staff, the child is in stable condition but could not release any further details on his condition, Davis said in a press release. At this time, no citations have been issued in this incident.

The ATV crash occurred about 1:30 p.m. July 3 on Corbet Drive.

The driver of the ATV, age 13, reportedly told troopers he was operating the 4-wheeler with a 10-year-old passenger and lost control of the ATV whiole going around a curve. The driver stated he was thrown over the front of the 4-wheeler and the passenger was also ejected as the ATV went into a ditch.

The driver did not sustain any injuries but the passenger was flown to Galveston by medical helicopter.

The crash remains under investigation and the names of the children are not being released at this time. After the investigation is complete, a determination will be made whether or not to issue citations, Davis said.

Texas law states a person under the age of 14 cannot operate an ATV unless accompanied by or under direct supervision of the person’s parent or guardian. The law further states ATV’s man not be operated on a public roadway, street or highway unless they are crossing a highway or street that is not an interstate. A person may not carry a passenger on an ATV unless the ATV is designed by the manufacturer to transport a passenger.
