NEDERLAND —
A lightning strike led to a house fire in Nederland on Monday.
Firefighters with Jefferson County Water District 10 volunteer department responded to the fire at about 1:39 p.m. July 9 at the home in the 1500 block of Dixie Boulevard.
Firefighter Efran Avendano, public information officer, said the lightning struck near the attic and fire was visible through the roof.
“We went in to check the interior but had to switch to a defense attack,” Avendano said of the blaze. “The inside was immediately engulfed and we had to pull firefighters out. There wasn’t much we could do on the inside.”
Standing outside the structure Avendano pointed to two sets of firefighters who were attacking the flames from different angles. One section of the home over the garage was in danger of collapsing.
No one was at home at the time of the fire and the homeowner, who declined to speak about the fire, watched with neighbors as firefighters worked.
The volunteer fire department was assisted by Nederland, Port Neches and Groves fire departments in extinguishing the blaze.
