NEDERLAND —
Jinni Akins hasn’t been at her new job very long but she’s already making a visible difference.
In a whirlwind of smiles and handshakes, Akins met and greeted a steady stream of well wishers during a reception welcoming Akins to her new position as the executive vice president of the Nederland Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday morning.
The chamber office, located on historic Boston Avenue, was near capacity as representatives of the city, chamber members and community members got their first formal chance to meet Akins.
“She is full of energy and has fresh ideas,” Sylvia Root, president of the chamber of commerce, said. “She’s not shy at all about getting in there and meeting people.”
Akins officially took over the post on June 20. Since then she did a little redecorating such as painting the front office of the facility, she pointed out.
Mike McGee, business loan manager for 5 Point Credit Union, said Akins has a great personality and people skills.
“I’m glad to see her here and I think she’s a big asset for the community,” McGee said.
Guests mingled around the room, stopping to talk with Akins and take advantage of an early morning breakfast. Root took advantage of a quiet moment in conversation to thank all who attended the reception and show support for Akins.
“We’re glad to have you here,” Root said. “And as soon as you meet her, you’ll realize why we wanted her here.”
Akins said she was “blown away” by the support of the Nederland and surrounding communities.
The new executive vice president has a background in association management, having been employed for Leadership Southeast Texas in the not-for-profit sector. Prior to LSET she was employed by Coldwell Banker Commercial, Clear Channel Radio and the Nederland Economic Development Corp.
Akins is married, has one son, and was raised in Nederland. She’s a graduate of Nederland High School and attended Blinn Jr. College in College Station.
