Cajun music, classic cars fill Riverfest Park Saturday

PORT NECHES — Against a backdrop of speeding boats and blustery winds Saturday Port Neches Riverfront Park was filled with classic car and Cajun music lovers attending the 3rd Annual Cajun Jam and Car Show in the Park.

The annual event is sponsored by the Cajun French Music Association of Louisiana Golden Triangle Chapter.

“We’ve got attendance today, the best since we started,” Jerry Bellot, Association president said.

The event was started three years ago to help preserve the area’s Cajun heritage, while showcasing antique cars.

From Zydeco to the blues, area bands took the stage to entertain crowds, and entice couples to the dance floor.

“Cajuns love music and food, dining and dancing. Take that out and you ain’t got anything,” Bellot said.

This year about 85 cars were on exhibit.

Robert Bergstron, 68, of Port Neches and his 3-year-old grandson Kaden Christenson, visiting from Pearland, headed straight to a 1962 red Corvette.

“The first thing he wants to do is look under the hood at the motor,” Bellot said. “He loves cars, whenever he comes over he always brings a backpack full of Hot Wheels.”

Bergstron said he enjoys old cars and had a 1948 Anglia in the garage and a 1931 Model A.

While the day provided a good opportunity for the grandfather and his grandson to share their love of cars, others enjoyed the music and free food.

Rod Darby, 76, of Nederland, and Lillie Henderson, of Orange were attending the event for the first time.

“I like the music, he likes the cars. So, we’re having a good time,” Henderson said.
