NEDC sells land to Sunoco for expansion

NEDERLAND — A deal has been struck between Nederland Economic Development Corporation and Sunoco Partners Marketing and Terminals L.P. that will allow the large marine terminal room to grow.

Nestled off Twin City Highway near Nederland’s closed landfill is a bustling terminal with five ship docks, three barge docks and the ability to store more than 22.5 million barrels of product.

The facility grew considerably on Wednesday with the pending sale of 255 acres of land for $1.475 million. The deal also comes with the right of first refusal on an additional tract of 614 acres of land in the same area.

Wayne Turner, terminal manager for Sunoco Logistics Nederland terminal, was present at the meeting. He told board members that the new acreage will allow the business to expand and give it a chance to grow.

“This is an ongoing effort of ours to provide a footprint for expansion of the terminal,” Turner said, adding that with the growth will come an increase to the tax base and construction jobs in Nederland.

Turner could not speak about specifics of the project at this time but said they are anticipating spending “several hundred million on construction costs” in addition to subsequent employment opportunities if they decide to go forward and create an other dock.

The piece of land has changed owners several times through the decades. It was once owned by Sunoco in the early 1980s before it was sold to the city of Nederland.

On Monday, Nederland City Council sold the 25 acres to NEDC for $1.475 million. By Wednesday, the NEDC had sold the property to Sunoco.

The land deal and possible project are not related to Keystone Pipeline Co., according to officials with the city.
