BEAUMONT —
Jefferson County Commissioners threw their support behind efforts to take mentally ill patients out of local jails and into facilities where they can get proper treatment.
In the process, they hope to save local tax dollars.
On Monday, County Commissioners approved a resolution asking top state government officials to immediately convene a meeting of the Legislative Budget Board.
County Commissioners are joining other counties in requesting the Budget Board transfer funds to enable the admission of mentally ill persons to a state facility and end the practice of holding them as prisoners within the county jail.
