Coast Guard building evacuated; suspicious package deemed false alarm

PORT ARTHUR — Offices at the Community Bank building, which houses the U.S. coast Guard, were evacuated for more than a hour on Wednesday as emergency officials investigated a suspicious package on Wednesday.

Port Arthur Police blocked a perimeter around the building, diverting traffic away from Turtle Creek Drive, Anchor Drive and a portion of the U.S. 69 feeder road beginning at about 12:15 p.m. on Aug. 15. Barricades were placed around the area with police vehicles at intersections and several vehicles from the city of Port Arthur were also used to block entrances.

Port Arthur Fire Department Public Information Officer Capt. Troy Irvine said the Coast Guard received a suspicious package which looked to be an explosive device and took precautionary measures by evacuating the building.

Investigators with Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms as well as the fire department’s explosive trained K9 were called in to inspect the package. The K9 did not “hit” on the package, Irvine said.

The package was found to be a training aid and the all-clear was given about 1:30 p.m.
