PORT ARTHUR —
HAMSHIRE, Texas (AP) - A busy interstate near Houston has been shut down and nearby homes evacuated after a semitrailer overturned in a collision with a pickup truck and spilled a hazardous chemical.
Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Stephanie Davis said Interstate 10 would be closed until at least 9 p.m. Sunday after the predawn accident that caused the 18-wheeler to release the flammable and corrosive chemical isobutene.
Officials say several dozen residents of a subdivision were in a Red Cross shelter on Sunday morning.
Davis says the driver the semitrailer was hospitalized with leg injuries. She says two passengers in the pickup weren't injured.
Hamshire is about 65 miles east of Houston.
