Seahawks have winning scores on tests too

PORT ARTHUR — On Monday, Lamar State College-Port Arthur’s student-athletes were honored for their high scores, not on the court or field but in the classroom.

Impressively, 15 out of 19 softball players made a 3.0 or higher.

A luncheon was held in the Carl Parker Multipurpose Center to recognize the student performance with the presentation of gifts and free pizza.

Softball player Victoria Day, who finished the fall semester with a 4.0, thinks being an athlete contributes to her academic performance.

“We (athletes) have to have the initiative to get things done in order to be good students,” said Day.

“Sometimes if we have a tournament I find myself studying late at night, but you also have you teammates to help you with the work so it works out,” said Day.

Head softball coach Vance Edwards said that the player and assistant coaches organize study sessions between practices that have contributed to the academic performance of the team.

“As always our goal is to have all of our girls get a 3.0 and we are getting closer to that goal,” said Edwards.

Michelle Judice, English instructor at LSC-PA, said she attributed much of the success of the softball players to the well-minded coaches, who press their players on the importance of maintaining high academic standings in their classes.

Also among those honored at the lunch were three members of the Seahawks dance team.

“Not only can they shake their booties but they can study hard too,” said Mavis Triebel, government teacher at LSC-PA.

Darrian Provost, a Seahawk boys basketball player, was also honored.

The pizza was provided by Dominoes.
