Lamar President Simmons announces retirement date

Lamar University’s President James Simmons announce today that he will retire effective Jan. 31, 2013.

He said his primary reason for retiring is that both of his twin sons’ wives are expecting babies, and he and his wife decided that there would not be time to be involved with their now nine grandchildren.

He expressed his sadness in bringing his career to a close.

“It’s not the fact that I’m the best jazz tenor saxaphone player present in the country,” he said to laughter and applause. “It’s really the fact that this is our home town. We were both born in Beaumont, Texas, and we’ve both been affiliated with this institution for more than 42 years. That is very very special."
