Bond is set at $3.5 million for a Groves man in relation to a fatal shooting that occurred at his residence on Monday.
John Mason Broadway, 25, was formally charged with the murder of Cody Charles Hokett in Judge Charles Carver’s courtroom Wednesday morning and the multi-million dollar bond set, according to personnel at the Jefferson County Correctional Facility.
Police in Groves responded to a 911 call of a shooting at about 9:44 p.m. Monday, July 23 at a home in the 3100 block of Cleveland Avenue. Upon arrival they found Hokett, 26, of Nederland, slumped in the doorway of the home with a gunshot wound to the chest. The victim was conscious and able to speak at the time and was transported by Acadian Ambulance to Christus Hospital-St. Mary in Port Arthur where died at the hospital shortly after. Justice of the Peace Precinct 7 Brad Burnett pronounced the victim deceased.
Groves City Marshal said a shotgun was retrieved from the scene and police believe the firearm was the murder weapon.
The suspect was located by Beaumont Police officers at a car wash in Beaumont and arrested.
This is the first homicide in the city of Groves since the Dec. 22, 2009 fatal shooting of Vincent Mullins Jr., 43, at Amber Park Apartments in the 5300 block of Gulfway Drive. Christopher Pierre Thomas of Port Arthur was charged with the homicide and was found guilty of the murder last year.
