Christmas comes with severe weather

PORT ARTHUR — Severe weather was predicted to travel along the nation’s gulf coast late Monday night, bringing heavy rain, strong wind, and a possibility of tornadoes.

The National Weather Service had been tracking the storm for several days, and it was expected to stretch from Florida and stall after reaching Texas’ gulf.

Jim Sweeney, a meteorologist with the NWS in Lake Charles, said the cold front coming from the east will meet warmer temperatures when it hits the Gulf of Mexico, which creates a chances for tornadoes.

“It’s a possibility,” Sweeney said. “Historically when it hits that area there’s enough sheer wind to create tornadoes.”

In light of the strong winds and rainfall, Sweeney said families should make sure their outside holiday decorations are properly secured. It might even be a good idea to take the down, especially larger items, he said.
