Word from Mardi Gras insiders is that the theme for the 18th Majestic Krewe of Aurora Grand Ball will be Games People Play, a theme shared with Mardi Gras of Southeast Texas.
The Grand Ball will be held at the Robert “Bob” Bowers Civic Center on Feb. 6, 2010, featuring games from Chinese Checkers to Candy Land.

Saldana-Moreno gets honor
A proud father wrote to let readers know that Margarite Saldana-Moreno, formerly of Nederland, was recently awarded a Hispanic Business Woman Leader of the Year Award for the greater Philadelphia area. She is a single mother and her two daughters, Maris and Mia, and lives in Downingtown, Pa.
Saldana-Moreno is the daughter of Louis and the late Juanita Saldana and graduated from Nederland High School. She attended Texas A&M; University and graduated from Lamar University.
She is vice president for global regulatory affairs and is employed with VAN-WATER-ROGERS (VWR), a global wholesale laboratory distributing company in West Chester, Pa.
Hughen plans big show
Here’s a scoop with more to follow: In honor of the children of Hughen School and Bob Hope School, Provost Umphrey Law Firm LLP will present A Hughen Christmas of Hope, starring B.J. Thomas and comedian Dick Hardwick.
The show will be Saturday, Dec. 19, at the Julie Rogers Theatre, Pearl Street in downtown Beaumont.
Pancakes and Jazz
You can eat pancakes in the morning and hear a free jazz concert in the afternoon on Saturday. Oct. 24.
Clayton Salter says the United Methodist Men will serve “world famous” pancakes at a Fall Pancake Breakfast set for 8 to 10:30 a.m., at the church, 4101 Texas 73. Salter has tales of being a pancake waiter and it seems he’ll go to great lengths to make sure guests get their three kinds of pancakes, bacon, sausage and ham, warm syrup and more. Donations will be accepted.
That afternoon the Port Arthur News will sponsor Jazz Ambassadors in Concert, a free concert of the United States Army Field Band at 3 p.m., at the Robert A. “Bob” Bowers Civic Center, off Texas 73.
CAST to host Houston Symphony
The Concert Association of Southeast Texas invites local music lovers to hear the Houston Symphony in concert at the Performing Arts Center of Nederland High School at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 25.
This is the first CAST concert of the 2009-2010 season. Single tickets will be on sale at the door. The center is off Spurlock Road. To become a member, call 727-5215 or 962-7684.
