Community turns out to see the “new” Renaissance

GROVES — Under a festival-like atmosphere a raw voice reminiscent of Port Arthur’s own Janis Joplin filled the air as music lovers moved to the tune.

Kozmic Pearl, the Ultimate Janis Joplin Tribute Band, provided the entertainment for the Renaissance Hospital Fall Community event on Saturday.

The hospital, located at 5500 39th St., was recently purchased by local businessman Steve Nguyen who threw Saturday’s party for the community.

“We are a community hospital and we want to give back to the community,” Nguyen said. “This is a community happening, not a hospital happening. We are here for the community.”

Mike McEachern, chief executive officer, said the event turnout was fantastic.

“Renaissance is a community hospital that has served Southeast Texas for many years,” McEachern said.

Emergency room director, Dr. Thomas Konjoyan, snapped photos of the Joplin tribute band and tapped his foot along with the music.

“I am a Renaissance man,” Konjoyan quipped.

Booths with information about the hospitals services were set out and a circus-like tent provided cover and a seating area for crowd members who needed a place to take a break or down a hot dog or link.

A Moonwalk, face painting and cookie decorating garnered the attention of the younger members of the crowd.

“We’re here to stay,” Dorraine Smith, business development director for the hospital, said.
