BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) — A man has died after he was shot by a Beaumont school district police officer during an altercation near a school campus.
Word of the death came in a statement issued by Beaumont school Superintendent Carrol Thomas. The statement says police Sgt. Don Gordon shot the man in self-defense.
District spokeswoman Jessie Haynes says the shooting happened Friday morning near an alternative school.
Assistant Superintendent Terry Ingram says the BISD officer intervened in a disturbance between two men. Police have identified neither man, but district officials say students weren’t involved in the shooting.
The school district statement says Gordon has been placed on administrative leave pending completion of an investigation.
